Let's hear it for nerdy spaces around the world. While on my Danish Design tour featured in my last post, I rode past Bastard Cafe in the Center on Rådhusstræde and I couldn't help stopping in for a coffee and cookie.
Located in the foyer of Copenhagen cultural center, Huset KBH, they are dedicated to offering a gathering place for all Copenhageners to relax with friends.
Meet Bo, one of the founders. Open since November 2014, Bastard Cafe has already become a destination for gamers of Copenhagen and Denmark at large. Bo talked to me about the struggles of owning a specialty store in Denmark, as the gaming culture there isn't as strong as somewhere like Seattle. But he has a great passion for the hobby and is excited that other spaces are starting to open up in other cities in his country.
The store owns hundreds of games, see pictures below. Some free to play, most require a modest daily fee, or become yearly a member and unlimited gaming is yours. The bar has a wide selection of drinks, alcoholic and non, that keeps the party going.
A curated selection of entry level games for people who might be new to the hobby, or those trying to introduce a friend to gaming. It was nice to see two of my favorites, Ticket to Ride and Dominion, are well represented.
Lounge areas for hanging and/or gaming. There's even a piano, covered at the moment, for those game nights you might want to make a little classier.
Generous seasoned veterans of the gaming scene can offer to take a shift at the Guru Table, helping interested newbies figure out a complex game without pouring through a 15-20 page rulebook.
So much space! A room off the main section lets people have a little quieter space for those day long Twilight Emperium adventures. The for-sale shelf is tiny, but I'm sure they'd be happy to special order a game that struck your fancy.
If you find yourself in Copenhagen wanting to mingle with friendly locals over a beer or a board, go to Bastard Cafe and tell them Seattleite At Large sent you. You won't get anything, but I'm sure they appreciate the free advertising.
